What we collect
Scout currently collects very little personal information.
If you email us, we receive your email address and anything you choose to include in your message. We use this to respond to you, deal with corrections or submissions, and handle content and photography enquiries.
Like any website, our hosting and security services may process technical information such as your IP address, browser and device information when you visit Scout. This is used to deliver and protect the site, not to build a profile about you.
Scout also stores a small number of preferences in your browser, such as your theme choice and whether you have already seen certain site prompts or animations. These are not used to identify or profile you.
Location
Scout only asks for your location if you choose the map’s locate me function.
Your browser asks for your permission first. Your location is used to centre the map and is not stored by Scout.
When map imagery is requested, the relevant map provider may receive information about the area being displayed, as described below.
Cookies and local storage
Scout does not use advertising cookies.
If you choose Allow when Scout asks, we use Google Analytics to count visits and see which parks and pages are popular. Google Analytics sets cookies (named _ga and _ga_…) to tell one visit from the next. It does not load at all until you choose Allow, and if you choose No thanks, nothing is set. We don’t use it for advertising, and we don’t sell the data.
You can change your choice at any time:
We use a small amount of browser storage to make the site work as intended, including:
- Remembering whether you have seen the home-page opening animation
- Remembering certain home-page and map preferences
- Remembering your light/dark mode choice
- Remembering whether you have seen certain prompts
- Remembering your analytics choice
You can clear this storage through your browser settings. Scout will continue to work without it, although some preferences or introductory features may appear again.
The separate Scout admin area uses authentication cookies for authorised editors. These are not used for ordinary visitors.
Third-party services
Scout uses third-party services to host the site, store and deliver images and 3D content, provide maps and weather information, and, if you allow it, measure visits.
These currently include:
- VercelWebsite hosting
- SupabasePark database
- CloudflareImage and 3D asset storage and delivery
- Mapbox / EsriMap imagery
- RainViewerRain radar
- Open-MeteoWeather information
- Google AnalyticsVisit counts, only if you allow it
When your browser connects to these services, they may receive technical information such as your IP address as part of providing their service. Their own privacy policies apply to the information they process.
Links to Instagram and other external websites take you away from Scout. Those sites have their own privacy policies.
How long we keep information
We keep emails for as long as necessary to deal with the enquiry and, where relevant, for as long as we need them to maintain a content credit or permission record.
Technical logs and browser storage are retained according to the relevant service or browser settings.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law, you may have rights to access, correct or delete personal information we hold about you, as well as other rights depending on how we use it.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your personal information, you can complain to the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
Security
Scout uses HTTPS and access to the site’s content database is restricted. We keep the personal information we handle to a minimum.
No website can guarantee complete security, but we take reasonable measures to protect the information we hold.
Changes
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The latest version will always be published on this page.
